What Service does my Piano Need?

As a professional piano tuner covering the North West UK, I regularly help homeowners, schools, and musicians choose the right tuning service for their piano.

One of the most common questions I receive is: “My piano sounds off — do I just need a basic tuning, or something more involved?”

The best service for you depends on two main factors:

  • How long it’s been since your piano was last properly tuned

  • Whether your piano has been moved recently

To make things clear and transparent, I offer three tailored service levels:

  • Basic Tune – £80

  • Tune & Service – £100

  • Pitch Adjustment – £120

Here’s a simple guide to help you decide which one is right for your piano.

1. Basic Tune – £80

Ideal for: Pianos that have been tuned within the last 6–12 months.

If your piano is regularly maintained and was last tuned sometime in the past year, a Basic Tune is usually all that’s needed to bring it back to concert pitch and make it sound bright and even again.

What’s included:

  • Full fine tuning to A440 concert pitch

  • Minor regulation checks and adjustments

  • Assessment of your piano’s current condition

  • Expert advice on looking after your instrument

This service is perfect for well-cared-for pianos that just need a regular refresh.

2. Tune & Service – £100

Ideal for: Pianos that haven’t been tuned for a little longer than a year, or any piano that has been moved recently.

Moving a piano — even within the same house — can knock it significantly out of tune. When a piano goes over 12 months without tuning, it often needs extra work to restore stability.

The Tune & Service includes additional time to ensure the tuning holds better afterwards.

What’s included:

  • Comprehensive tuning to concert pitch

  • Extra service work including pin tightening, minor regulation, and cleaning of accessible areas

  • Special attention to help the piano settle after being moved

  • Full condition report and maintenance advice

This is my most popular service across the North West UK because it offers excellent value and longer-lasting results.

3. Pitch Adjustment – £120

Ideal for: Pianos that haven’t been tuned for many years and are now very out of tune.

When a piano has been neglected for a long time, the pitch can drop dramatically. In these cases, a standard tuning isn’t enough — the piano first needs a careful pitch raise before fine tuning.

What’s included:

  • Initial pitch raise to bring the piano safely back toward correct tension

  • Full fine tuning to concert pitch

  • Thorough service and stabilisation work

  • Detailed assessment and recommendations for future care

This service gives even long-neglected pianos a new lease of life.

How Often Should You Tune Your Piano?

For the best sound and longevity, I recommend tuning your piano at least once a year, with twice a year being ideal — especially in the North West where our changeable weather can affect tuning stability.

Not Sure Which Service You Need?

Don’t worry — many customers aren’t sure until I assess the piano. When I arrive, I’ll listen to your instrument and honestly recommend the most suitable (and cost-effective) option for you on the day.
